You will learn
In The Vital Shoulder Complex masterclass osteopath, author and respected bodywork specialist John Gibbons looks at one of the most neglected areas of the body: the shoulder complex. During the course he will take you on a fascinating journey of enlightenment, teaching you to recognise pain and dysfunctional patterns that can arise from dysfunctions found within the complex region of the upper limb.
You’ll learn how to identify specific soft tissue dysfunction, and harness powerful Muscle Energy Techniques (METs) and rehabilitative exercise protocols to restore function to your athletes and patients.
Lessons include functional anatomy and biomechanics of the shoulder and cervical spine, the connection to the gait cycle, pelvis and even the gluteal & psoas muscles, and how the shoulder and cervical spine can be linked to pain and dysfunction in distant sites of the body. John demonstrates how to functionally assess the shoulder and cervical spine, firing patterns of the Gmax and Gmed, and specific length tests of muscles that can alter the position of the pelvis and lumbar spine (and, in turn, effect the upper limb). He answers questions such as:
- How does a gall bladder problem cause referred pain to the shoulder?
- Why might pain in the superior aspect of the scapula be linked to a weak gluteus maximus muscle on the opposite side?
- A winged scapula can be caused by damage to which nerve?
- How would you treat a SLAP lesion?
- How does the gait pattern contribute to pain and dysfunction of the shoulder region?
- How can the application of gluteal-psoas-specific Muscle Energy Techniques aid full-body well-being?
Once you have a comprehensive understanding of the anatomy, pathology and assessment techniques, you will be shown how to correct a comprehensive number of dysfunctions with myofascial soft tissue techniques, athletic and kinesiology taping, and specific METs. And in the final part of the course, John shares the most up-to-date, research based exercises for rehabilitation and restoring normal shoulder movement. All of the principles described throughout the course can be incorporated quickly and effectively into any treatment plan.
The accompanying text contains over 350 colour photographs and illustrations and insightful case studies from The Bodymaster's own practice. Much more than just an educative tour of the anatomy of the shoulder complex, this course will provide you with clear treatment protocols to successfully restore pain free movement and improve sporting performance in your own patients.
